Jenny Eckert and other members of the Greenbelts, an environmental safety organization, protested the arrival of the Quartermaine boat, the SS Tracy, for carrying unsafe chemicals. As the ship arrived in Port Charles harbor, it exploded — and sank! Robert Scorpio pulled one bedraggled survivor onto the safety of the dock — then threw him back. The man was his estranged brother, Mac Scorpio.
Jenny’s brother, Bill Eckert, was a crewman on the boat along with their cousin Joey Moscini. Bill, who was a cousin of Bobbie and Luke Spencer, left the hospital and went home to his father Fred, mother Angela and his ten year old son Sly, who had arrived in Port Charles ahead of him. Bill had recently divorced Sly’s mother Nancy.
Harlan Barrett of Barrett Enterprises came to Port Charles to salvage the SS Tracy. He was impressed with Bill Eckert, who invented a unique machine which raised the ship. Harlan hired Bill as chief engineer and promised him a bright future with his company.
Bill and Jenny’s father Fred died of a heart attack. Their mother Angela moved to Portland. Jenny returned to Port Charles University and moved in with nurses Amy, Sheila and Meg. Bill, now a wealthy man, moved into an abandoned lighthouse with his son Sly and Finian O’Toole, whom Bill had hired as a housekeeper. He fell for Harlan Barrett’s marketing genius daughter, Julia. Bill’s ex-wife Nancy, having heard about his inheritance, suddenly wanted custody of their son, Sly. Bill knew what she really wanted and wouldn’t give in to her blackmail. She was murdered! Later, Bill was charged with the murder, but the real killer turned out to be Sly’s baby-sitter, Finian O’Toole, who had argued with Nancy and accidentally killed her.
Using both the virus and the pills he got from Sean, Tony found a permanent cure for Sean’s wife Tiffany and Paul’s daughter Susan. On Founder’s Day, the cartel was busted! Taub was killed, Faison escaped, and Bill Eckert shot and killed Harlan Barrett, causing his daughter Julia to break up with him.
